Starter and Alternator Replacement in Sarasota

Starters and alternators are the two parts most often replaced when they didn't need to be, because the symptoms overlap with a bad battery or a bad cable. Mr. Sarasota Mobile Mechanic tests first, then replaces the part that actually failed, at your driveway or office.

Mobile mechanic removing a starter motor at a Sarasota home

Starter Symptoms

One click, no crank, lights stay bright. The solenoid is pulling in but the motor isn't turning. Classic worn starter. Sometimes a tap on the starter body gets one more start out of it, which is how a lot of people limp to the parts store. It won't keep working.

Grinding or a high-speed whir without the engine turning. The starter drive gear isn't engaging the flywheel, or it's engaging and slipping. Can be the starter, can be teeth missing on the ring gear. The second one is a bigger job and worth knowing before a starter gets bought.

Intermittent no-start, works on the second or third key turn. Worn brushes or a solenoid contact that's burned. Also the symptom of a bad ignition switch or a neutral safety switch on an automatic. The voltage drop test at the starter terminal while cranking separates these.

Starter stays engaged after the engine starts. A stuck solenoid or a sticking relay. Shut the engine off; a starter that keeps spinning against a running engine destroys itself fast.

Engine bay with alternator and serpentine belt during a mobile alternator check in Sarasota

Alternator Symptoms

Battery warning light on while driving. The charging system isn't keeping up. The car runs on the battery alone until it's flat, which is anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour depending on what's switched on. Turn off the AC and headlights if you can and head somewhere safe.

Headlights dim at idle and brighten when you rev. Low output at idle. Often a failing alternator, sometimes a slipping serpentine belt, which is why the belt and tensioner get checked first.

Whine that rises and falls with engine speed. Bearings in the alternator, or diode failure putting AC noise into the system. A scope or a good meter shows the ripple.

New battery, died again in a few weeks. Undercharging. The battery was never the problem, or it was, and the alternator was the second problem.

The test is the same every time: battery voltage with the engine off, charging voltage at idle, charging voltage at 2,000 rpm with headlights, AC, and rear defrost on, and ripple. A healthy system holds around 13.8 to 14.6 volts under load. Numbers outside that range get explained to you in plain terms.

Done on Site on Most Vehicles

Alternators on the top of the engine with belt access are usually one to two hours. Alternators buried low behind the engine on some transverse V6 engines take longer and sometimes come out from underneath, which still works on jack stands in a driveway. Starters range from twenty minutes on a four-cylinder with the starter in front to several hours on engines where the intake manifold has to come off to reach it. The year, make, model, and engine size tell which one you have, and you hear the time and price on the phone.

Serpentine belts, tensioners, and idler pulleys get inspected during every alternator job because a glazed belt or a weak tensioner will take out a new alternator's performance. In Florida heat, belts crack earlier than their mileage suggests.

Service runs across Sarasota, Siesta Key, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Palmetto, Osprey, Nokomis, Venice, Englewood, and North Port.

Starter and Alternator Questions

Can I drive with the battery light on?

Briefly, to get off the road. The car is running on the battery alone and will stall when it's flat, often without warning. Power steering and brakes get heavy when it does.

Is a rebuilt alternator okay?

A quality remanufactured unit from a known rebuilder is fine and is what most shops install. Cheap no-name rebuilds fail early. You'll be told which one is going in.

Could it be the battery instead?

Yes, and that's the point of testing. See the battery and jump start page for the overlap.
